I hate it when you talk to someone and then use terms that I am unfamiliar with and I have to nod and smile without understanding half of what they say. So I am making this as easy as I can, I am one of those jerks that uses a lot of big words and doesn’t think twice about it. I am keeping a running list of words that you may or may not be familiar with and defining them down below (with pictures if I can).
So if I miss a word…ASK ME…I won’t judge you
BMI – is a person’s weight in kilograms (kg) divided by his or her height in meters squared. The National Institutes of Health (NIH) now defines normal weight, overweight, and obesity according to BMI rather than the traditional height/weight charts.
Laparoscopic gastric banding is surgery to help with weight loss. Thesurgeon places a band around the upper part of your stomach to create a small pouch to hold food. The band limits the amount of food you can eat by making you feel full after eating small amounts of food.
Filling the band – The band is made of a special rubber (silastic rubber). The inside of the band has an inflatable balloon. This allows the band to be adjusted. The doctor can decide to loosen or tighten it in the future so you can eat more or less food. The band is connected to an access port that is under the skin on your belly. The band can be tightened by placing a needle into the port and filling the balloon (band) with water. Your surgeon can make the band tighter or looser any time after you have this surgery. It may be tightened or loosened.
Sleeve gastrectomy is a surgical weight-loss procedure in which the stomach is reduced to about 25% of its original size, by surgical removal of a large portion of the stomach along the greater curvature. The result is a sleeve or tube like structure.
